CSA 1, 5¢ green tied neat RICHMOND Va. NOV 22 (1861) neat circular datestamp, an EARLY USE on fresh commercially-made envelope to Capt. C.C. Cocke, Manassas Junction (Va.), slightly reduced at both ends, Ex Werner. $250.
Dr. Cary Charles Cocke (1814-1888) enlisted as a captain on August 6, 1861, and was commissioned into 2nd Company, Virginia Fluvanna Second Light Artillery. He resigned February 17, 1862, to care for his father after his older brother, Gen. Philip St. George Cocke, committed suicide. Before the war, he was a colonel in the 12th Virginia militia. He was a farmer in Bremo Bluff after the war; he owned 1,522 acres in 1877.
