CSA 7-L, 5¢ blue pair tied by pen cancels and light blurry MONTGOMERY / ALA // MAY / 31 / 1864 cds on a small legal cover to Hon. Probate Judge, Tuskaloosa, Alaba which originally had a Probate Court certificate enclosed. This, with other legal covers, was the subject of an M. Clinton McGee article in the September 1959 issue of the Confederate Stamp Album (predecessor to The Confederate Philatelist). He related the interesting story of William Forrester and one of his slaves who apparently met their deaths in a common disaster in 1859. Probate dragged on for many years, understandably complicated by the war and a contested will. McGee was certainly the one to tell this story as he was a law professor at the University of Alabama and incorporated the Confederate Stamp Alliance in Alabama. When he wrote this article, the certificate was still enclosed. Somewhere along the line, it was separated from the cover which is offered alone here. Top back flap missing. Ex McGee. $160.

Robinson, who was the postmaster of Post Oak, Calhoun County, Arkansas, from July 16, 1860, to May 31. He is requesting payment of taxes owed. Rare Arkansas cancel, the ONLY LISTING FOR THIS TOWN in Dr. Bruce Roberts’ Arkansas census. Ex Clippert. $750.

BLACKS & WHITES WAY COVER: CSA 7-L, 5¢ blue pair with filled in frame at left, tied pen strokes with ms. “Way” on TURNED COVER to Mrs. Sarah A. Williams, Blacks & Whites, Nottoway County, Virginia. The letter was given to a post rider between post offices who might have placed it on a boat traveling on the Nottoway River, on which the banks of Blacks & Whites is situated. Inside (first) use was a soldier’s letter with RED PETERSBURG / Va. // SEP / 8 [1864] cds to Mrs. Robert H. Williams, Fords Depot, Dinwiddie County, Va. It is endorsed “John W. Williams, Co. G. 22nd Batt” (22nd Virginia Infantry, Field’s/Walker’s Brigade, Heth’s Division, 3rd Corps, Army Northern Virginia). Cover faults and wear but scarce. Listed in CSA Catalog with CV of $750. CSA 7-R, 5¢ blue pair (tiny nick out of top margin, right stamp), tied bold clear CHARLESTON / S.C. // DEC / 18 / 1862 CDS on neat blue commercially-made cover addressed in the hand of Gen. Alfred H. Colquitt to his brother, Col. Peyton H. Colquitt, Columbus, Ga., with ms. “O.B.” at top (Official Business). From the award-winning Brian M. Green “Confederate Generals” exhibit and signed by him. Brian states this is the only war-dated cover he has ever seen addressed by Gen. Colquitt. Examples of 4 Colquitt-signed documents from the National Archives accompany, easily corroborating the handwriting. RARE GEN. ALFRED H. It was named for the large Chinese city on the Yangtze River. Ex Benson $125.

N. Carolina. Harriott Middleton: The Middleton correspondence is well known by Confederate students and the family papers are in the SC Historical Society. Harriott (1828-1905) was the daughter of Henry A. Middleton, a wealthy planting family. $125.
