He owned Cornhill Plantation, a medium-sized plantation with 30 to 50 slaves in Privateer, S.C. where he farmed and practiced medicine. Detailed bio included.

CSA 2a, lightly pen canceled 4-margin 10¢ light blue Paterson print on folded business letter headed Navasota (Texas) Novb 19, 1862 to "R. C. Campbell, Huntsville, Texas" re freight received by train and plan to ship goods by the next safe stagecoach. The running of the H. & T.C. Railroad to Navasota in 1859 changed a sleepy settlement into a hub of business and economic activity. Navasota became the shipping and cotton-processing center of the region.

CSA 2a, 10¢ light blue Paterson tied light GREENVILLE C.H. / S.C. // OCT / 28 cds on homemade cover to “Miss Harriott (sic) Middleton, Flat Rock, Henderson County, North Carolina”. Harriett Simmons Middleton was married to Henry Augustus Middleton who was connected to European royalty. The Middletons were an extensive and prominent Carolinian family.

CSA 2e, 10¢ milky blue Stone Y tied indistinct ANDERSON C.H. S.C. FEB 7 cds on homemade turned cover to “Sergt D. F. Anderson, Orrs Regt. Rifles, Co. L, Richmond, Va.”; inside use endorsed by same soldier and sent to his wife with GUINEYS / Va cds and pencil “Due 10”. Military records reveal him as Daniel F. Anderson and he was part of A. P. Hill’s Army of Northern Virginia. A very nice soldier use, to and from.

CSA 2, 10¢ blue Paterson tied SPARTANBURG / S.C. // DEC / 8 / 1862 double circle cancel on wonderful blue printed adversity cover fashioned from New York station form noting “New York, Duane Street Pier, Ticket Office, Emigrant Agency, Express Freight, Milk Agency” and more; on underside of flap is contemporary handwriting “This comes of people “going to get married directing letters upside down etc.”; back flaps sealed with red sealing wax which also peeks out from lower left corner of the stamp – obviously the gum was not sticking too well. To cap off an already nifty cover, it is nicely addressed to “Dr. C. E. Fleming, Surgeon 22nd S.C. Regt. Evans Brigade, Kinston, North Carolina”. His military records show no more than the cover address, but a full unpublished bio is included courtesy of Terry Hambrecht. Records show that while he did attend medical classes, he never received a degree although he did practice medicine. After the war he was an apothecary, cotton merchant and practiced medicine as well. He died in 1894.

Unpublished physician bio enclosed. During the war, John A. Barksdale served as a volunteer in Richmond and North Georgia, administering to the sick and wounded. He was a South Carolinian and spent most of his career as physician and druggist in Laurens C.H.  He was also elected for a term to the SC State Legislature.

Col.  Wilson was in the House of Representatives when the Ordinance of Secession was passed and raised a company of Calvary, AKA “The Chester Troop”, which he placed under Walker. Mayo Cabell (1800-1869) was a wealthy owner of multiple estates and a successful businessman who ran a store at Tye River Warehouse with boats and a freight business on the cancel as well as sawmills.

CSA 2-Ha-v5, 10¢ dark blue Hoyer with Shooting Star variety, position 14, 4 large margins, used with red grid and matching red SPARTA GA MAR 25 (1862) on excellent long folded letter to Honl A.H. Stephens V.P. Richmond, Va. from Judge Jas. Thomas and marked/addressed to “Dear Elic.” Thomas was not only a close friend, but was related by marriage. The letter is full of insight of the times, with numerous mentions of military appointments, dignitaries, Linton Stephens, and politics. Both the philatelic use and the letter are excellent. $700.

Braxton Bragg, Commanding 2nd Grantt Division, Jackson, Tennessee. Stamp has a thin and lower left corner replaced, cover slightly reduced at top with part of back flap missing.
