Dr. John Howard Furman (1824-1902) was born in St. Luke's Parish, Beaufort Co, SC and received his M.D. degree in 1845 from the Medical College of the State of SC, Charleston, SC. He practiced medicine in Sumter Co. SC. No evidence was found that this man served the Confederacy in a medical capacity. Dr. John Howard Furman was the grandson of Dr. Richard Furman, the namesake of Furman University.
