CSA 11, 10¢ blue left sheet margin tied neat RICHMOND / VA. // APR / 20 cds on TURNED COVER (see inside use) to Maj. J.B.E. Sloan CQM, Columbia, S.C. with ms. “C.S. Treasury” at upper left. Inside use opens completely to reveal ms. canceled CSA 12, 10¢ blue, no town of origin but side flap with “Col. J.B.E. Sloan, Columbia, SC” so that is presumably the town of mailing; addressed to Mr. Jas. E. Hagood, Pickens C.H., S.C. Very Fine. NARA records indicate Controlling Q.M. Office at Columbia (hence CQM). $225.

John Bayles Earl Sloan (1828-1906) enlisted February 1, 1861, as a colonel on Gen. & Staff, Quarter Master Department, 4th S.C. Infantry. Mustered out April 26, 1862. Born in Franklin County, Georgia, but is buried in Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Pendleton, S.C. 1850 census shows him a clerk of age 22 with father Benjamin 53 year old manufacturer with $8,000 worth of real estate. In 1860, they established a home that became known as Tanglewood. Pendleton SC historic marker for property. Columns and ruins are all that remain of the site, which was destroyed by fire in 1908. Was a Piedmont plantation-style house, resting on tall piers and having large rooms. The family rebuilt the home as a classical colonial in 1910, reusing the columns in a new portico. Stayed in the Sloan family until sold in 1950s. Burned to the ground again in 1970. In 2004, funds were allocated by Anderson County Council for the construction of a new Pendleton branch library and groundbreaking for the library took place December 17, 2004.
