SA 12c-AD, 10¢ blue lower right corner single tied RICHMOND / VA. // MAY / 14 [1864] on cover to Miss Elsie G. Skinner, Care of Col. F. G. Skinner, Richmond, Va. thus an OVERPAID DROP use. Col. Frederick Gustavus Skinner (1814-1894) was the Lt. Col of the 1st Va. Infantry when he was severely wounded in the chest at 2nd Manassas. He never returned to active duty but was nevertheless promoted to Colonel in July 1863 and retired to the Invalid Corps. A period notation on the reverse dates this cover to May 11 & 13, 1864. Col Skinner’s son, P. Thornton Skinner, was a private in Co E 4th Va. Cav. at this time and is the one who most likely sent this cover home to his sister. Sealed flap tear. Ex Kohn [VA] $200.
