CSA 12-Ada, 10¢ milky blue (close to huge margins all around) tied neat RAPID ANN STATION / Va. // MAY / 23 [1863] cds on fresh cover to Miss A. A. Hodge, Opelika, Ala., cover reduced at right, sent to sister by soldier brother George W. Hodge of 6th Alabama. Ex Roger Ballard. $120.
Sgt. George W. Hodge enlisted 1 May 1861 at Union Mills, Va., as a private in (New) Company C, Alabama 6th Infantry. Captured 5 May 1864 at Spotsylvania C.H. / Wilderness / Ely’s Ford. On 16 December 1864 he was on the rolls at Elmira wanting to join the Union ranks and be stationed in Pensacola where he had relatives. I don’t know what happened, but he died of variola (measles) as a prisoner at Elmira, NY 6 April 1865 and is buried there at Woodlawn National Cemetery, grave marker 2659.
