CSA 2-Y, 10¢ light milky blue, Stone Y (Scott CSA 2-e), tied ---TON partial CDS and torn in half before use on soldier’s cover to Mrs. William M. Gist, Female College, Columbia, SC, with endorsement of W.M. Gist Maj. 15th Regt S.C.V. on commercially-made envelope slightly reduced at left. $100.
William M. Gist (1840-1863) served in Co. E, South Carolina 1st Infantry, and Co. B, SC 15th Infantry. He was promoted through officers ranks to that of major. He was killed in action November 18, 1863, while in command of the 15th Regiment, near Knoxville, Tennessee. Some sources note him as colonel but I found no record of such promotion in his military records.
