John Wesley Heidt (1841-1909) was born in Savannah and served as a Sergeant in the Chatham Light Artillery, a local independent artillery unit raised in Savannah and assigned at this time to the Savannah defenses. The cover is to his girlfriend, Leila Villard (1844-1929), in Robertville SC whom he would marry in 1864. The Heidt-Villard Correspondence is extensive and well-known, as much of the correspondence is archived at the Georgia Historical Society. After the war, John W. Heidt became a Methodist minister in 1866 and served in various locations in Georgia including as president of several colleges and universities.
