Col. Henry Harford Cumming, an attorney by profession, was from a prominent Georgia family. His father, Thomas, served as Augusta's first mayor after the city's incorporation in 1798. Henry is known as the father of the Augusta Canal, which began in 1844. During the Civil War, the canal had a large part in the thinking of George Washington Rains in building the Confederate Powderworks there. It produced around three million pounds of gunpowder.
