CSA 6 SINGLE, 5¢ blue (4 nice margins) tied neat CHARLESTON SC JUN 24 (1862) double-circle datestamp on commercially-made cover to Miss E. B. Grimball, Care of J.B. Grimball Esq., Spartanburg C.H., South Carolina. The vast majority of covers are franked with pairs. Ex Ralph Swap. $250.
John Berkley Grimball (1800-1892) was a prominent planter with plantations near Charleston. His papers are housed at Duke University. His son, John Grimball (1840-1922) was a well-known Confederate naval officer about whom I wrote a series in Kelleher’s Stamp Collectors Quarterly (see Articles page).
