CSA 7-L pair, 5¢ blue on London paper, pen canceled with manuscript Watson’s Bridge NC October 13 (1862) postmark to Wm. S. Pettigrew Esqr. Raleigh N.C. with contents docketings up left side indicating letter was sent from Wm. C. Campbell. Ex Ralph Swap. $125. 

William Shepard Pettigrew (1818-1900) was a member of the North Carolina Secession Convention. He was the older brother of Confederate Gen. James Johnston Pettigrew (1823-1863) who commanded Heth’s Division at Pickett’s Charge and was killed covering the retreat from Gettysburg a few days later. W.S. Pettigrew inherited two plantations from his father, an influential landowner in eastern North Carolina. The Pettigrew family papers are at UNC (1776-1926).
