William Henry Gist was the 68th Governor of South Carolina from 1858-1860 and a leader of the secession movement / signer of the Ordinance of Secession. He had two sons who fought for the Confederacy, the eldest of whom was killed by a Union sharpshooter outside Chattanooga in 1863. He was a cousin of States Rights Gist, the Confederate brigadier general who died leading a charge at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee.
