CSA 11c, 10¢ greenish blue (irregular margins and lower right corner torn off/attached pre-use) tied bold beautifully struck blue GREENSBOROUGH / N.C. // JAN / 9 cds on semi-official imprint cover of Chief Enrolling Office, 6th Congressional District, Greensborough, N.C., with “Official” at upper left (CSA Catalog WD-CN-15 with CV of $500). Addressed to Capt. Thos. A. Martin Asst. En. Officer, Wilson, N.C. Some folds and light stains but overall Fine use. $375.
Thomas A. Martin was a 20-year old student when he enlisted at Alamance County, N.C., as a private in Co. E., NC 13th Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia. The 13th NC was variously under Longstreet, D.H. Hill, A.P. Hill, Pender, and Wilcox. Martin rose through the ranks to Major by January 1865. He was wounded at Gettysburg and returned a year later. He surrendered at Appomattox.
