Major Pleasant Woodson White (1820-1919) was the Chief Commissary for the State of Florida. The Pleasant W. White papers are housed in the Tebeau Collection of the Alma Clyde Field Library in Cocoa. White was born in 1820, the son of a Methodist minister. He studied and graduated from Emory College in 1848 and began practicing law in Quincy, Florida. In 1849, White married Joseph Leonard Smallwood’s niece, Emily, also purchasing Smallwood’s home in Quincy. White was commissioned a Major in the Confederate Army in 1861 and as Chief Commissary Officer for Florida commanded the depot at Quincy. White became active in politics and served as Judge of the Second Judicial Circuit from 1869-1879. He also served as Commissioner of Lands and Immigration from 1881-1885. White died in 1919. The White house in Quincy is marked with a Florida Historical Marker.
