CSA 12, 10¢ blue (4 margins) tied WINCHESTER / Va. // SEP / 6 [1864] CDS on CAPTURED (U.S.) OFFICE OF INTERNAL REVENUE, FOURTH DISTRICT OF MARYLAND imprinted cover to Mrs. Lizzie Ott, Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Va. Very rare Confederate use of captured Union government Official Business cover; unrelated ledger use on face of cover, top back flap missing and tiny tear at top. $550.
Private James Edwin Ott (1845-1932) of Company B, 23rd Virginia Cavalry – this cover sent to his mother, Elizabeth Ott. Ott enlisted 3-5-1864 at Shenandoah after serving in the Quartermaster Department. He was hospitalized at the General Hospital at Winchester 7-27-1864, from illness (illegible in records). Returned to the rolls 10-31-64 which coincides with the use of this cover. Appears on list of prisoners of war paroled at Winchester 4-17-65. He is noted at discharge as 19 years old, 5’8”, light complexion and hair, blue eyes. He attended VMI for one year, class of 1865. Merchant, Harrisonburg and Roanoke; Farmer, Stuarts Draft. Member, Stonewall Jackson Camp, CV, Staunton. One of 11 siblings as noted on Find A Grave website. Had three children with wife Mary Bettie Coiner Ott (1852-1923).
