Ewart, Hendersonville, N.C. COLUMBIA / S.C. // 5 cts / SEP / 8 [1861] circular datestamp. The CSA Catalog notes the earliest recorded date of use as September 4, 1861, thus this is an early use. SCV $7,500, CCV $2,000. CONTROL MARKINGS ON THE FRONT ARE MUCH MORE DESIRABLE than those on the back. A beauty! $2,500.

Mary A. McMahon Ewart of Columbia was married to James Beckett Ewart of Kershaw on 14 November 1848. He died in 1860 and she remarried to widower, Col. Valentine Ripley of the 33rd Virginia Infantry.
