Col. James Douglas Blanding (1821-1906) had served in the Mexican War. He served as Colonel of the 9th SC Infantry Regiment, Anderson’s Brigade, Longstreet’s Division, Department of Northern Virginia. He was married to Lenora Agnes McFadden Blanding and they had 15 (!) children. He was one of Sumter's leading lawyers and practiced the profession for 35 years. He also served in the Legislature on the Education and Judiciary Committees and as mayor of Sumter. Before the signing of the Ordinance of Succession, he raised the first company of volunteers in the Sumter District.
