W. Bagby Care Dr. G. W. Bagby, Richmond, Va.; endorsed "Flag of Truce Boat via Fortress Monroe" at left and "from Lt. J H Chamberlayne, prisnr War" at top, manuscript "Examined D. S. Alexander," small hole punch at upper left, few repaired edge tears at top, Very Fine, with 2016 PF certificate. $850.
John Hampden Chamberlayne is an oft-quoted Confederate letter writer. Born in Richmond; educated at University of Virginia. Taught briefly in Hanover County; later a Richmond lawyer. Artillerist during the Civil War. Served as an aide to Generals Reuben Lindsay Walker and A.P. Hill. Commanded an artillery battery. Post-War, he was a farmer in Louisa County, a newspaperman in Richmond, and a member of the Virginia legislature. His war-time letters were published in 1882 and are often quoted and familiar to students of the Army of Northern Virginia. His nickname was "Ham."
