CAMP CHASE, COLUMBUS, OHIO: CSA 11, 10¢ blue and US 65, 3¢ rose (both 4 large margins) tied together by RICHMOND VA.OCT 18 (1864) circular datestamp as well as partial COLUMBUS O. double circle on US 65. Additional Columbus markings dated OCT 3 (1864) as well as Camp Chase EXAMINED (CSA Catalog type PWH-24, type C) on cover to Mrs. M.A. Zimmerman, Bethania PO Forsyth County, N.C.; manuscript “Via Flag of Truce.” Original letter from prisoner to his wife saying he was captured at Winchester (typed transcription accompanies). From James Zimmerman, Prisoner of War, Camp Chase, Ohio, Prison 3, Barracks 4. Second page of letter. 1999 CSA Certificate 03452. Jack E. Molesworth signed pencil description on verso stating, “The finest POW cover with both sides stamps I’ve ever seen.” He priced it at $3,500 years ago. Ex Ralph Swap. $3,500. 

James C. Zimmerman was a 29-year-old farmer when he enlisted 7-17-1862 into Company D, NC 57th Infantry. He was listed as wounded in the right hand at Fredericksburg 12-13-1862. He was taken prisoner at Rappahannock Station, Va., 11-7-63 and confined to Point Lookout. He was paroled 3-16-64 but captured again at Winchester 7-28-1864 and confined to Camp Chase. He was paroled from there 3-2-1865 and exchanged. Military record included.
