Minor M. Woodward enlisted 9-10-1862 in Lexington, Ky, and fought with Company I, 2nd Kentucky (Morgan’s) Cavalry, Army of Tennessee. He is shown on a roll of prisoners captured at Bradyville, Tenn., March 1, 1863, and sent from Military Prison Louisville to Camp Butler, Illinois, March 11, 1863. “W.W.” Woodward is shown transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio, July 26, 1863, and as having been captured at Salineville, Ohio. Further records show he escaped during the night of February 15, 1864. Printed note says: “These escapes have been effected by some tampering with the guards in my opinion. I have no satisfactory evidence of the fact, but escape otherwise is now practically impossible. Wm. W. Orme, Brig. Genl. U.S.V. Commanding.” Some records show Woodward’s name as Warner M(inor). Woodward (1844-1912) but are filed with Minor M. Woodward. The initials W and M are very mixed. Could be two different people (different place captured) or the same with handwriting confusion. Would take a little more digging to be sure, but the escape is interesting.
