UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA / VA 1861 blue double circle with handstamped PAID /5 on cover with manuscript J.S.D. at upper right – probably to charge his box – docketing “Lucy M. Davis” up left side; addressed to “Capt. Eugene Davis of the Albemarle Light Horse [Artillery], Fairfax Court House, Virginia”. Slight water stain at bottom. Ex Engstler and Thacker  $300.

Capt. Eugene Davis led the Albemarle Light Horse Artillery, also known as the 30th Virginia Cavalry, was mustered into Confederate States service on 1 July 1861. Company K, the Albermarle Light Horse, was ordered to Manassas without going to Lynchburg to be sworn into state service and served as an independent company on 21 July 1861. The regiment was originally organised as an infantry regiment but was assigned to Colonel R C W Radford as a cavalry regiment. After 31 October 1861, the regiment became kown as the 2nd Virginia Cavalry. Davis was a 39 year-old lawyer from Charlottesville when he enlisted 5-20-61 as a captain; he was a UVA graduate, son of an early UVA law professor, John A. G. Davis. He also served as the mayor of Charlottesville for a year. (detailed military records included). On 8-15-63 he was mustered into Co. D, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Eugene’s brother Richard T. Davis was chaplain of the 6th Va. Cav. Eugene was taken prisoner 5-11-64 at Yellow Tavern, VA and took the oath of allegiance at Elmira NY 2-25-65.
